Having a local guide who knows a lot about the town makes your trip even more fun. Nagashima-san, Toshima City Volunteer Guides for International Visitors (GIV) accompanies Yumi-san from Hong Kong and Ludo-san from Belgium in their brief cultural exploration of the Ikebukuro-Mejiro area.

Their first destination is the Tokyo Metropolitan Theater, which is located just next to the west exit of JR Ikebukuro Station. The Theater offers a wide variety of programs from regularly-held concerts to experimental stage shows.

Their next destination is Jiyugakuen Myonichikan, which used to be a school for girls. Designed by the architectural legend Frank Lloyd Wright (and completed in 1921), the buildings, furniture and lighting are all exquisite and precise. It is, says Yumi-san, a place that calms the mind.
At the ample Myonichikan Hall, you can enjoy tea and buy original goods, which will make a splendid souvenir from Tokyo.

The Mejiro Teien is a circuit-style garden with a pond around which you can have a 360-degree stroll. The carefully-positioned trees and flowers provide beauty all year round. “I should come here again when sakura is in bloom”, says Ludo-san. Spot-billed “karugamo” ducks residing the pond have adorable babies every spring.
The photogenic weeping cherry blossoms are popular among visitors with a camera. The sakura flowers are particularly spectacular when illuminated at night.

They wrap up the tiny trip with lunch at “egg Tokyo” , the first overseas branch of the café restaurant “egg” in New York City. The traditional American Southern dishes served here are voluminous and satisfying.
